Campfire Pigs in a Blanket

When we went camping a few weeks ago we were introduced to a new concept by our friends...pigs in a blanket roasted over the campfire.  Here's the recipe.  Are you ready?  It's so simple it's silly.

1 8-pack hot dogs (we really love Oscar Meyers' premium nitrate and nitrite free hot dogs -- this week they're on sale at Meijer -- buy 8 and they are 99 cents!)
1 tube (of 8) crescent roll dough...you know the kind you whack on the counter?

Take a triangle of dough and wrap it around a hot dog.  Smush it around so that it covers the hot dog mostly.  Skewer it on a hot dog roasting stick.  The best way is so that it can get all of the long sides near the coals.  Like this...

Make sure that you don't get the hot dog in the flames but near the coals.  Keep a close watch on it and turn it every so often.  The thinner you spread out the dough the better your chances of not having a doughy pig in a blanket.  They are delicious!  Give it a try!

What a clever idea -- I'll have to keep that in mind for bonfires :)

Thanks for sharing your recipes, tried the macaroni one and it got the thumbs up from our DD (also known as the macaroni queen.)

Interesting, I wonder if wrapping it in tin foil would work? I always like to put cheese in mine and I use biscuit dough...we had our first family camping trip the first weekend in august. I haven't been camping since I was a child, we had a wonderful time, I look forward to camping more often and I look forward to experimenting with this recipe!

Thanks so much for your kind words ladies! Michelle, I think the tin foil would help reduce the browning of the roll or biscuit. Great idea! : )

My daughter asked to make these for dinner tomorrow when we go camping. Brilliant idea, especially the advice for using foil to keep the dough from getting charred. Thanks!
